ASWA Wine Comp

Atlantic Seaboard Wine Association Wine Competition:

ASWA_Wine_Comp_1The Atlantic Seaboard Wine Association (ASWA) has conducted a wine competition for many years. As the Vinifera Wine Growers Association (VWGA) the wine competition centered in the early years on wines from the State of Virginia. The organization realizing that good and sometimes great wines were being made outside of Virginia decided to change the focus of its wine competition to encompass the wines from the states on the Atlantic seaboard starting in 2005 and subsequently changed its name to reflect the more regional approach the organization was adopting. The goal of the Association is to make the public aware that the eastern seaboard is a quality wine-producing region.

The Atlantic Seaboard Wine Association has completed its 12th annual wine competition in Haymarket, VA at The Regency at Dominion Valley Country and Golf Club. The competition covers the 17 states from Maine to Florida that border the Atlantic including Vermont, West Virginia and Pennsylvania. The number of wineries in this year’s competition was 112. The numbers of wines were 532. Wineries from ten states on the Atlantic seaboard were represented in the competition: DE, GA, MD, NC, NJ, NY, PA, RI, VA, and VT.

The Association holds an award ceremony on Capitol Hill each year after the completion of the competition under the auspices of the Congressional Wine Caucus. For additional information about the Capitol Hill events see the Press Releases and photographs see WINE CAUCUS.

Winners from the competition are normally presented at the Unified Wine and Grape Symposium in Sacramento, CA each year at the regional wine tasting held in the convention center.

ASWA_Wine_Comp_2The BEST OF SHOW this year was 2013 Cabernet Franc Reserve from Narmada Winery in Amissville, VA. The competition issued 73 gold medals, 165 silver medals and 148 Bronze medals. The total medals award were 77% of the entrants.

A panel of 17 judges from CA, FL, GA, LA, MD, NC, PA, RI, and VA judged the wines. The information on the winning wines and judges can be found on the Association web site:
